What is a child and adolescent psychiatrist?

The child and adolescent psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and the treatment of disorders of thinking, feeling and/or behavior affecting children, adolescents, and their families. A child and adolescent psychiatrist offers families the advantages of medical education, the medical traditions of professional ethics, and medical responsibility for providing comprehensive care. The child and adolescent psychiatrist uses the knowledge of biological, psychological, and social factors in working with patients.

Training in child and adolescent psychiatry

In Germany, child and adolescent psychiatric training requires 6 years of medical school, which usually is completed as a medical doctor. This is followed by at least 1 year of residency in general psychiatry or pediatrics and at least 4 years of approved residency training in specialized psychiatric work with children, adolescents, and their families in an accredited residency in child and adolescent psychiatry. In Germany, during these 5 years of specialized training, the physician has also to be trained in psychotherapy. Dr. Nedoschill has been trained in behavior therapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy.
